Step 1: Choosing the Right Fabric

Fabric choice can make or break your sewing experience - especially as a beginner. For this skirt, stretchy fabrics like jersey or ponte are your best friends. They’re forgiving (hello, hidden mistakes!), provide a comfy fit, and don’t fray like woven fabrics do.

Translation? Less stress, more fun.

Step 2: Experiment, Learn, and Embrace the Oops Moments

Sewing is a skill, and like any skill, it comes with a few hiccups. I spent a whole year playing around with skirts - some too short, some uneven, some just… bizarre. But every oops was a step closer to getting it right.

Start simple. Try, fail, adjust, repeat. Each attempt makes you a better sewist!

Step 3: Gather Inspiration and Take Proper Measurements

Inspiration is everywhere! Pinterest, fashion magazines, or even that one dress you love but wish was just a little different.

Before cutting into your fabric, grab a measuring tape and jot down your waist and hip measurements. If you already have a well-fitting dress or skirt, you can use it as a guide. A custom fit makes all the difference!

Step 4: Drafting and Cutting Your Fabric

Now, onto the real fun - turning those measurements into a pattern.

  • Sketch out your pattern based on your waist, hip, and desired skirt length. It should look something like the image below. I would first start by drawing one long vertical line for your length. Next, add your waist, hip, and knee lines perpendicular. I then freehanded the curve of the skirt based on an existing dress that I like the shape of. I’ll include my pattern here. For reference, my waist = 29.5 in and hips = 35 in.

  • Cut 2 front pieces and 2 back pieces (on the fold) from your fabric carefully, ensuring even edges. My fabric was a bit sheer, hence doubling it up for more coverage.

Step 5: Sewing It All Together

You don’t need a fancy serger to make this skirt (though it does add a polished touch). A simple zigzag stitch on a regular sewing machine works just fine!

  • Pin together your 2 front pieces (right sides facing) and separately your 2 back pieces (right sides facing) and serge the hem.

  • Open the front piece so that right sides are now facing out. Place this between the two layers of your back piece. Your front right side should be facing the right side of a back piece. Serge the sides together (all four layers) and when complete turn your skirt right sides out - this may take some configuring..

  • Remember to Iron your seams between sewing (seriously, don’t skip this step, it makes a difference!).

  • Lastly, cut a 1.5 - 2 inch elastic slightly smaller than your waist. Connect the two edges of the elastic into a circle (so that it will fit like a waistband) and sew the two edges together. Serge the elastic waistband to the top edge of your skirt (with the right side facing out). Finally, fold in your elastic into the wrong side of your skirt so that you now have a nice clean edge and sew in the ditch on the sides to secure the elastic in place.

  • And fin!
